Yes, because I wanted the fizzy, transcendent feeling that I grew up watching my parents grab the tail of and whisper to a few times a year. The spell of the joy and mystery of recognition that can happen, watching regional Shakespeare when you’re not even sure what they’re saying but for a second you feel like your soul is on trial, or a terrible commercial that’s making you sob and you’re not sure why. It can all be so bad. It can also be beautiful. I wanted to do all of that for a living.

Ambition was an alpha feeling, something I didn’t recognize, but OK wow, apparently I had it. But I also had the other thing that could ruin everything.
